Sports Participation, Communication Skills, Performance, Social Inclusion, and Quality of Life for Individuals with Hearing Impairments
Abstract
Hearing loss may influence communication, psychosocial well-being, social participation, and engagement in physical activity throughout the lifespan. Adolescents and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing frequently encounter communication barriers, social isolation, and reduced opportunities for participation in recreational and sporting activities. Consequently, sport has emerged as an important context for promoting not only physical health but also social inclusion, identity development, psychological well-being, and quality of life within the deaf community. This review aims to examine the relationship between sport participation, communication skills, psychosocial outcomes, and quality of life among deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. The literature indicates that participation in physical activity and sport contributes to improved physical fitness, motor skill development, self-esteem, social competence, and community engagement. Deaf sport organizations and events further provide culturally and linguistically accessible environments that facilitate social interaction, strengthen Deaf identity, and support self-determination. However, participation may be limited by communication difficulties, inadequate accessibility, lack of deaf-specific sport opportunities, and environmental barriers. Family support, inclusive educational practices, accessible coaching, and community-based sport programs have been identified as important facilitators of participation. Overall, the evidence suggests that sport represents a valuable tool for enhancing physical, psychological, and social well-being among deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Increasing access to both recreational and competitive sport opportunities may contribute to lifelong physical activity participation, improved communication experiences, and greater quality of life.
